Global employment survey finds booming job market in India

A quarterly survey of hiring and firing trends around the world has found that not only have recruitment levels in India increased significantly since September 2009, they are now among the highest in the world.

The ‘Global Snapshot’ from the international recruitment firm, Antal surveyed more than 6000 organisations in 30 countries on whether they were currently hiring and firing at professional and managerial level. It then asked whether they planned to do so in the coming quarter. 71% of Indian companies said that they were currently hiring compared to around half in September. The only country to have a higher rate of hiring was Nigeria.

The survey also showed that Indian organisations plan on increasing their hiring activity even more, with 78% expecting to hire managerial staff over the next three months. Combined with a very low rate of letting people go (16% and set to drop by a further 3%) the results indicate a strong employment market which is improving all the time.

“Confidence is back at its peak in the Indian job markets, its happy days again for job seekers.” says Joseph Devasia, Managing Partner, Antal International, Mumbai. “Manufacturing & auto sectors along with the traditional IT, FMCG, Pharma companies have ramped up hiring, as against what we witnessed in our previous survey. Increased hiring indicates that the need for exceptional talent is now ever more.”

HOW TO BE A BRAND BY YOURSELF

How to build BRAND “I”? -  Hitesh Bhatia

I often receive notifications from people across the globe on my LinkedIn account mentioning they found my profile impressive or that they liked my profile and would want to connect with me or know more about me. On close analysis one realizes that most of these individuals are Indians and have been active on the networking front over the past few months or just a couple of years.

What lies in the secret to creating a brand “I” or a brand “ME” is the ability to create an impact on an individual. The needs for recognition, companionship, attraction and response have been the key reasons for individuals to be recognized or appreciated.

The agenda of creating a brand “I” comes from the fact of wanting to be appreciated, recognized and being looked up to. Think of it like this, when your boss, colleague or friend enters a room that you’re in; what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Jackass, Idiot, Boredom, Moron, Yelling, Frustrated or Leadership, Fun, Jokes, Laughter, Jokes, Problem Solved. As an individual the particular person has created an image of you in his mind that only he can change. Similarly you too have created an image of yours in minds of others that you alone can change. You are what you want to be, I for example have decided I want to be “FUN”, hence I play the role of fun with friends, colleagues, family, etc. When I enter a room the people inside should feel here comes’ Hitesh, who spreads happiness or fun. A simple way of discovering what kind of brand you are is by putting together a few friends or colleagues in a room and playing a game called “Zapped”. Have an individual leave the room and ask the others to speak out aloud the first thought that comes to their minds about that individual when he enters the room. The response has to be spontaneous and not thought over. Repeat the exercise a few times and then step out yourself and see what the group has to say. Urge them to be honest as that will help in deciding what individual you want to be and what role you are portraying to them.

Interview with Doug Bugie, CEO/Investor, Antal International Network, relating to the expansion of our Executive Recruitment franchise into India and Globally.

1. Tell us something about the origin, growth and success of ‘ Antal International network ’? When, where and how did it originate?

Antal started in 1994 as company owned operation in mid level to senior level executive recruitment. It entered franchising about 5 years ago. I am a major investor/shareholder/director and run the business as CEO.

Historically what is really interesting is Tony Godwin the founder, went into Eastern Europe, e.g. Russia, Poland, Hungary long before any other western recruitment firms.  Even today, due to this history, Antal has gone into and successfully penetrated mainly developing as well as developed economies and feels very comfortable and confident–frankly ,unlike many of our competitors both inside and outside of franchising in doing this as we have blazed this trail before.  This is why we are very optimistic and excited about expanding into India.

In Russia and Poland and now China, Antal has surged to the leadership position in recruitment and is arguably the fastest growing privately held recruitment business in the world today.  We intend to do the same thing in India, i.e. become the clear market leader .

2. When did you start franchising? From where did you get the inspiration to opt for franchising as a mode of expansion?

I have been in recruitment franchising for 26 years and for 19 of those years in the global market, in excess of 40 countries, always in executive and mid range recruitment.  I got my start studying at the feet of giants in the USA, Alan Schonberg and founder and CEO of the largest franchise in recruitment there, MRI (where I served as marketing director for my first 6 years in franchised recruitment) Bob Angell, arguably the most successful USA based franchise salesman in the history of this industry, with over 2000 sales in his career.

I have sold about 600, 375 in the USA and 225 globally.  With Bob retired and Alan effectively retired from active duty.  I’m the ‘old man’ of the global industry at 56, –but still have a lot of juice left!

Alan and Bob remain friends and Alan is still my number one lifetime mentor. They have irreplaceable experience and wisdom.
Tony Goodwin , the founder of Antal International, saw that franchising could be a great way to expand his highly successful group of wholly owned businesses and he and I got together to combine our thinking and expertise to drive the business forward via franchising….and this is clearly getting a positive result!
